External Battery for Urban Cycling Lifestyle
iOttie Halo power bank was also a bicycle light. The project was inspired by the urban cycling culture in New York City. More and more cyclists depended on their mobile phone battery to last longer. The Halo was designed to provide maximum battery capacity, as well as all the necessary features of a bicycle light.
MAXIMUM CAPABILITIES IN ALL SITUATIONS
After careful consideration, the team narrowed down the most essential features to incorporate into the design. The main objective was to deliver the most powerful and long lasting battery capacity in the housing.
DIAL > BUTTON
Based on extensive research, the team learned that the biggest complaint of operating a bicycle light was the actual operation of the light. Many lights on the market only had one button to navigate all the functions. If the user pressed the button one too many times, they had to start the process again. The “dial” design helped solve this problem. In addition, a dial was much easier to operate while wearing gloves.
COMPACT FORM FACTOR
One of the most challenging tasks of this design was to fit the largest rechargeable battery capacity inside the compact housing. There were many factors to consider such as: heat transfer, manufacturing process, and reliability.
