THE TEAM
Paul Sukphisit / Industrial Design
Adam Malek / Mechanical Engineer
MY ROLE
• Led all industrial design efforts based on specifications and requirements.
• Collaborated with project engineer to bring the concept to production.
• Evaluated all user experience including fast and removal time.
DURATION
13 Months
REDUCING CORD CLUTTER
Tasked with solving cable management with sit-stand desks. All cables must be extra long to adjust according to the height of the desk. How to manage the extra long cords when the desk is in the low position?
BUSINESS TO BUSINESS VOLUME
As a B2B (Business to Business) platform, Humanscale products are sold in very large quantities. Humanscale technicians deliver and install products at the location. Technicians install 50+ devices in one appointment. Not only do the designs need to function well for everyday tasks but they also need to be easy for installation or removal.
KEEP IT SIMPLE INTERNAL COMPONENTS
After exploring many methods of how to deliver the power from the outlet to the top of the desk, the team decided on a coiled power cable. The team chose a coiled power cable due to the following considerations:
Passed the 500 cycle tests
Approved by UL
Available without any additional development time and cost
EASY TO INSTALL AND REMOVE ATTACHMENT METHODS
Since the cable management system needed to be compatible with large volume installation, the attachment design was crucial. The team explored many methods and materials. The final design for the top attachment utilized hex screws that already came with the desk. The installer only needed to install the metal bracket, then push the NeatUp housing on to the bracket.
TOP INSTALLATION
INSTALL THE BRACKET
SNAP ON THE CABLE MGMT
FOOT INSTALLATION
COMPRESS THE FOOT
FLIP DOWN THE LOCKING LATCH
PROTOTYPE & TESTING
Once the team finalized the design, we tested numerous prototypes. The team provided the prototypes to other teams for input: install technician team, marketing team, and testing team.
DETAIL MATTERS
We worked with overseas suppliers for our manufacturing process. The team worked closely with the engineering team to produce the best possible parts. The review process was extremely detailed. The team reviewed each part for tooling feasibility and desired color and finish.
