Material + Cost + Time to Market
Studio bike design project was a very cost-sensitive project. The design specifications included target cost, features, and total weight. In order to meet all design criteria, the team first assessed the materials and availability. Each design decision was based on price and time to market. In addition to meeting these specifications, the task was also to design a well-functioning and easy-to-use machine.
INSPIRATION OPPORTUNITIES
This studio bike was highly constrained by cost, material options, and timeline. The team focused first on the shape of the frame. The frame’s geometry was designed to give the impression of speed. We then used plastic covers to implement additional design language to give a modern look. The final design was a combination of clean form with crease lines fading away. This design styling gave movement to the overall design of the studio bike.
CFM
ProForm studio bike lines shared the same colors and finish with other ProForm products. However, the team needed to meet unique CMF specifications for each customer. The team worked closely with suppliers to ensure all the CMF were implemented according to specifications.
PROTOTYPES & TESTING
Prototype was an important step in the design process. The team physically reviewed the design to ensure it accurately represented the design intent. Once all the prototypes were reviewed and signed off by involved teams, mass production process began.
MAJOR RETAILERS CONFIGURATIONS
The ProForm studio bike line offers numerous feature configurations. The bikes are sold both internationally and in major retailers throughout the United States. Each configuration is carefully specified to accommodate each retailer’s specific needs. In addition, within each retailer, there are many configurations for different price points. One of the biggest changes on this project was monitor size. Not only did the team design the bikes, the team also designed different monitor sizes to accompany each configuration.
